Feast of the trades (Carnival)
The trade festival is an alternative to Carnival. Adults may want to get under another skin once a year to identify with another person. Young children do it daily in their free play and do not have this need. We know that it is easy for them to be moms or dads in a moment, vendors, hairdressers, etc…, easily switching from one character to another. It is the expression of your desire to imitate everything that surrounds you.
Therefore this party is not a necessity of the children. However, carnival is a party that is lived in the environment and Waldorf education seeks to integrate into the cultural reality of the area in which educational activities are carried out..
For Waldorf education, it is very important to find an appropriate way to celebrate this day with our children., in a way that is age appropriate and meaningful to the child.
From the point of view of the Kindergarten (3 a 7 years) It is suggested that for boys and girls it is more appropriate and healthy those more traditional and ancient trades due to the gestures and movements that involve: to wash, hang up, knead, to knit, cardar lana, shake rugs, seamstresses, gardening…(pottery from 4 years or later as it absorbs their body heat and they are still balancing the sense of heat)
How we dress up: Our children do not need more than an apron and a headscarf or straw hat.
During free play time there is a lively working environment in the different "workshops". If there are children who want to participate in other activities, they can do it quietly, No one is obliged to "fulfill" the chosen task.
